Post 2003 U.S. commemorative coins designed by AIP artists or as part of a competition

[edit]

Each of the nominated files was either designed by an Artist Infusion Program (AIP) artist or designed as part of a competition. For reasons explained at Commons:Determining if U.S. coins are free to use, these works are not freely usable and should be deleted. See also Commons:Deletion requests/Apollo 11 Commemorative Coin Contest images and Commons:Deletion requests/US Mint Registered Copyrights.

The determination of which files should be deleted was made by visiting the mint's webpage for each of the post-2003 commemorative coins and reviewing the artist information. Coin sides designed by AIP artists or as part of a competition were marked non-free. Coin sides designed by U.S. mint employees were marked PD. If a determination could not be made, the coin side was marked unclear. You can see a table of my findings below. While I have been careful to only choose files and coins that are non-free, please let me know if I have made a mistake.

Post 2003 U.S. commemorative coins designed by AIP artists or as part of a competition 2

[edit]

New information has come to light on the designs of several commemorative coins. Notably:

  • The reverse of the 2010 American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollar was designed by Thomas Cleveland of the Artistic Infusion Program, not a mint employee, as previously thought.[1]
  • The reverses of the 5-Star Generals Commemorative $5 Gold Coin and the 5-Star Generals Commemorative $1 Silver Coin were designed by Barbara Fox of the Artistic Infusion Program, not a mint employee, as previously thought.[2]
  • The obverse and reverse of the Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative $1 Silver Coin were designed by Joel Iskowitz and William Burgard, respectively, of the Artistic Infusion Program, not by mint employee or by an unknown designer, as previously thought.[3]

The second part of this deletion request (files listed after File:2012 Star Spangled Banner Dollar Reverse.jpg) is various files that would have been deleted as part of the previous DR.

For reasons explained at Commons:Determining if U.S. coins are free to use, coins designed by Artistic Infusion Program contractors are not freely usable. For more detailed information on how the determination was made, please see User:Mysterymanblue/U.S. Coins with known copyright statuses#Commemorative coins.  Mysterymanblue  21:18, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted: Per nomination including the essay Commons:Determining if U.S. coins are free to use. The terms of use on the website of the US Mint state ‘’Coin and medal designs may be based on sources that are copyrighted and licensed to the United States Mint or otherwise used with permission. In some cases, such designs may themselves be covered by third-party copyrights assigned to the United States Mint. Numismatic designs may also contain third parties’ other proprietary material, trademarks, or logos licensed or provided to the United States Mint for limited purposes. Reuse of such designs may require permission of the rights owner.’’ There is a possibility these coins are copyrighted. Consequently, the uploader – or any other Commons user - has to show per COM:EVID that the image can be used with an acceptable licence. This has imho not been done in this case. So therefore these images must be deleted. --Ellywa (talk) 16:14, 19 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
